I really should be posting stuff everyday because this semester has really begun with a bang.
First off, I upped my dosage of anxiety medication because I went back to panicking. Clearly school is my most stressful environment.
Second, my Chinese teacher is on the verge of useless. In class she gives us more vocabulary and phrases that are more colloquial than what is given in the textbook but we aren't tested on these words- we're tested on the vocabulary in the book. Plus, she goes so quickly and doesn't go over the stroke order of the characters that I'm too afraid to write them, fearing I'll get in the habit of writing them wrong. Yesterday she went over the vocabulary a little bit more. Still, I found most of the class time spent on rushed colloquial terms. Not only that but our quizzes are before she teaches any lessons. For example, Sunday we preview vocabulary on our own and then Monday we're tested on vocabulary as soon as we walk in. Tuesday we preview the grammar on our own and complete the workbook lessons on our own. Then Wednesday we are tested on questions she makes up as soon as we walk in. To be fair, I'm sure if we had a question she'd answer them before handing us the quiz but seriously, you don't know what you don't know.
Also to be fair I should say what I like about her teaching method. I love the fact she uses the website www.quizlet.com which uses fun ways to preview the vocabulary, however, it only teaches us to recognize the characters not how to write them, which is what she tests us on. I also like the idea of independent study and having us preview before class but only if she would go over what we previewed to make sure we understand what we studied.
Anyway, third on the list would be my interest in French. I have now had two people tell me this is an unwise decision but I've been saying for years I would retake French and learn how to speak it fluently and so I'm considering French 202 next semester. I obviously haven't taken French for a while so I emailed the teacher and we're meeting to discuss it. I would definitely want to take French over D-term (December) to be better prepared even though the classes are so expensive. But that's part of the reason I want to do this now- because lessons outside of school ARE so expensive. I need another class to make me full time- why not it be French? I'm considering doing the same thing for Chinese since I know there are classes in the area and my teacher insists on going quickly.
So fourth would be the internship interview I have Thursday. Mom has insisted that I get an internship instead of a regular job because of the horrible economy and job market hiring people with experience over those who have none. This makes perfect sense to me so I'm meeting with a career lady who helps students look for internships to see if any are available for me and relate to my major.
Speaking of interviews, that leads us to this morning. This morning I had a phone interview with Sur La Table, a cooking store in downtown Naperville. I switched to sprint this summer because their plans are cheaper than Verizon. I found out this is because their service sucks. I roam in my dorm. No joke. So to prepare for this interview I stood outside for ten minutes to make sure I would have reception and be able to hear the interviewer. Well, I got worried when the lady didn't call exactly at 10:30 and went back in my room to get the phone number so I could call the store. Sure enough, I'm just about to call them when I have a voicemail.
My phone sent the interview straight to voicemail.
I called her back immediately and it turns out they want a seasonal person so I don't make the cut but the point is my PHONE sent my INTERVIEW straight. to. voicemail.
Not cool. I'm switching back to Verizon if my bill is super high.
