I really should be posting stuff everyday because this semester has really begun with a bang.
First off, I upped my dosage of anxiety medication because I went back to panicking. Clearly school is my most stressful environment.
Second, my Chinese teacher is on the verge of useless. In class she gives us more vocabulary and phrases that are more colloquial than what is given in the textbook but we aren't tested on these words- we're tested on the vocabulary in the book. Plus, she goes so quickly and doesn't go over the stroke order of the characters that I'm too afraid to write them, fearing I'll get in the habit of writing them wrong. Yesterday she went over the vocabulary a little bit more. Still, I found most of the class time spent on rushed colloquial terms. Not only that but our quizzes are before she teaches any lessons. For example, Sunday we preview vocabulary on our own and then Monday we're tested on vocabulary as soon as we walk in. Tuesday we preview the grammar on our own and complete the workbook lessons on our own. Then Wednesday we are tested on questions she makes up as soon as we walk in. To be fair, I'm sure if we had a question she'd answer them before handing us the quiz but seriously, you don't know what you don't know.
Also to be fair I should say what I like about her teaching method. I love the fact she uses the website www.quizlet.com which uses fun ways to preview the vocabulary, however, it only teaches us to recognize the characters not how to write them, which is what she tests us on. I also like the idea of independent study and having us preview before class but only if she would go over what we previewed to make sure we understand what we studied.
Anyway, third on the list would be my interest in French. I have now had two people tell me this is an unwise decision but I've been saying for years I would retake French and learn how to speak it fluently and so I'm considering French 202 next semester. I obviously haven't taken French for a while so I emailed the teacher and we're meeting to discuss it. I would definitely want to take French over D-term (December) to be better prepared even though the classes are so expensive. But that's part of the reason I want to do this now- because lessons outside of school ARE so expensive. I need another class to make me full time- why not it be French? I'm considering doing the same thing for Chinese since I know there are classes in the area and my teacher insists on going quickly.
So fourth would be the internship interview I have Thursday. Mom has insisted that I get an internship instead of a regular job because of the horrible economy and job market hiring people with experience over those who have none. This makes perfect sense to me so I'm meeting with a career lady who helps students look for internships to see if any are available for me and relate to my major.
Speaking of interviews, that leads us to this morning. This morning I had a phone interview with Sur La Table, a cooking store in downtown Naperville. I switched to sprint this summer because their plans are cheaper than Verizon. I found out this is because their service sucks. I roam in my dorm. No joke. So to prepare for this interview I stood outside for ten minutes to make sure I would have reception and be able to hear the interviewer. Well, I got worried when the lady didn't call exactly at 10:30 and went back in my room to get the phone number so I could call the store. Sure enough, I'm just about to call them when I have a voicemail.
My phone sent the interview straight to voicemail.
I called her back immediately and it turns out they want a seasonal person so I don't make the cut but the point is my PHONE sent my INTERVIEW straight. to. voicemail.
Not cool. I'm switching back to Verizon if my bill is super high.

Moving In
So move in day was Monday but I'm going to start with Friday since I can't explain everything that happened that day without going that far back.
Friday morning I woke up and got semi-ready because that afternoon Laura, my very dear friend from Atlanta, was flying back home and I planned on escorting her to the airport. I also planned to take the L straight from Midway Airport to my boyfriend's dorm to celebrate his birthday with him.
The entire morning we just sit watching TV since we had run out of things to do and we had to leave around 1pm anyway. Finally it was time to go so we took the L to the airport, I saw her off, and then went to my boyfriend's dorm to wait for him to return from work. I gave him a knitted Starcraft 2 hat with the zerg logo on it since he plays zerg. I also gave him an Edible Arrangements bouquet to substitute for cake since he loves fruit and isn't a huge fan of sugar.
The next morning, Saturday, I got up and returned to my aunt's to search for my camera which I am sorry to say I lost. I cannot find it anywhere. I was so sad I just went straight to my boyfriend Jerry's dorm, comPLETEly forgetting about the block party I had promised about six kids I was attending. He and I walked around Chicago for a bit until it was time to head over to German Fest which from his dorm was on the whole other side of Chicago. It took us about an hour to get there (thank you stupid L workers for making the L go so slow :p ). I was supposed to meet his good friend in from Afghanistan but he couldn't make it. At any rate, some other friends were there and we celebrated Jerry's birthday. I had planned that night on returning to my aunt's and sleeping there so I could wake up the next morning and begin loading her car and driving down to Naperville to move into my dorm; however, I decided Jerry was coming home with me since his dorm was so far away and my aunt's was much closer. On the L though Jerry convinced me it was better to go to his dorm so I ended up going with him back to his dorm. I ended up staying the night to watch him because he didn't feel well.
The next morning, Sunday morning to be exact, I woke up and checked on him and then left. I finally arrived at my aunt's around noon to find no car and two very anxious beagles, one of which is only a couple months old and therefore must be taken out when she's excited to avoid accidents. So after I took them out I waited for my aunt to return. When she did, she asked if I would watch the youngest, Millie, while she colored her hair. That took about an hour or two. In the meantime, Jerry told me he'd come help me move in. So around 4pm, my aunt finishes and Jerry arrives and we start loading the car, which I couldn't do while watching Millie because she isn't allowed downstairs. About 5pm we leave Chicago and head toward Naperville. I believe we arrived around 6pm, just as one of my roommates was leaving for dinner with one of her friends. She offered to help unpack but Jerry and I told her we had it under control.
So after forgetting my ID card to get back into the building a couple times we manage to move me completely in and realize there is no way I am driving him back tonight and taking a train back to Naperville. So we just go out to eat and we go to his house which is only 30 min away and we both crash there for the night.
By the way, this day, Sunday, was the ACTUAL day of Jerry's birthday. I know, what a way to spend your birthday- moving your girlfriend in :p
On to Monday, the first day of classes for me. Jerry and I wake up around 6:30 and leave around 7:30. We hit a lot of traffic but we manage to get back to my aunt's sooner than he expected. Still, the next train into Naperville isn't until 12:30 and my last class starts at 1:20 and since it's over an hour train ride I basically missed all of my classes on the first day.
And that is how this school year began.
